MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT (2014)
STORY LINE:
Despite whatever has been going on in his personal life, Woody Allen’s professional career has been going strong the past few years. His last three films have all been financial hits, with Midnight in Paris making a whopping $151 million worldwide (his most successful film to date) and garnering him an Oscar for best original screenplay (amongst other nominations). To Rome With Love wasn’t as big with critics, but still made a killing overseas, and last year even amidst controversy with his personal life Allen’s Blue Jasmine made almost $100 million worldwide and got Allen another original screenplay nomination. The 78-year-old director is at the top of his game, and already has a trailer for his latest, Magic in the Moonlight.
The film follows a magician and “the greatest debunker of fake spiritualists” (Colin Firth) during the Roaring Twenties who is brought in to expose Sophie (Emma Stone) as a fake to the wealthy Catlidge family, who she is staying with under the guise of being a psychic. Yet as he stays longer he too seems to be convinced by her, and by the looks of things they start a romance too. Sounds a bit cheesy in concept, but wit the typical Woody Allen flair it looks positively charming (despite the 28 year age difference between love interests Firth and Stone).
Allen has assembled a typically great supporting cast as well, making up the Catlidge family and their acquaintances are Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, Eileen Atkins and Simon McBurney. Sony Classics will be putting out Magic in the Moonlight in a limited release on July 25th, and likely expanding it later.
